- Video: Raphael Saadiq “Love That Girl”

Hot off the presses.  Here’s the video for “Love That Girl” off of Raphael Saadiq’s new joint, The Way I See It, due in stores September 16th.  I don’t know – Saadiq is my dude – but I’m having a hard time getting with this throwback to 60’s Motown sound.  However – Raph does sound good on the track.

Solange Sandcastle Disco Live

On Monday night in preparation for the release of her album (Sol-Angel and The Hadley Street Dreams in stores now!) Solange (Beyonce’s younger sister) was the musical guest on David Letterman’s show. Here is the video of her performing “Sandcastle Disco.” I’m not a fan.  I’ve actually been shadin’ on her just because – but lil’ sis did alright.

Awww Shucks Now! Hillary Said Harriet Tubman…

Ol’ girl did her thang.  She did what she HAD to do – politically speaking – and not a bit more…

  • She mentioned/talked up Obama at the beginning of her speech
  • She gave warm ”sisterly” props to Queen Michelle Obama
  • She situated the latest chapter of her own political narrative inside the broader context of the movement for Women’s Rights
  • She called out her most ardent backers/supporters – left them no wiggle room  “Did you vote for me or did you vote for the Marine, the person without health care…?”
  • She eloquently made the case for party-unity
  • She cleverly (and humorously) went after McCain.  That “Twin Cities” line was GOOD
  • She effectively invoked the image/spirit of Harriet Tubman (I heard some black folk took issue with this. Why?)

Like i said, politically speaking she handled her business.  However, on the social tip, I think that Hillary missed a key opportunity to meaningfully advance the ongoing dialogue about race that has surfaced time and time again throughout the 2008 election cycle.   I personally believe that Hillary should have seized that charged occassion at the podium to, amongst other things… (see my previous post on this subject)

Michelle Obama!!!

She killed it!!!  Go on sista!!!  She was poised, confident, authentic, charismatic, and warm.  She did an excellent job of connecting the Obama biography to that of the everyday American biography.  She was also able to effectively capture/articulate the aspirations of women across all colors, social stations, and generations.  Did I mention that the sista looked GR8!!!  Did you see those shoulders?  That’s all I got on this.  What else is there to say?  Feel free to share.

2008 Olympics and China…an Observation

Aren’t socialist/communist countries, amongst other nefarious things, supposed to suppress/beat the humanity and creativity out of their subjects?  We’ll, that sure wasn’t evident in China.  I saw nothing but pure unbridled creativity on brilliant display during the opening ceremonies of the 2008 Olympic Games.  And that creativity was matched by an equally impressive display of precise execution.  It was pretty amazing to watch.  Now, I know about China’s questionable human rights record (is our own record that remarkable?).  I’m also keenly aware of some of the human atrocities committed under the banner of socialism/communism (and capitalism, and democracy, and religion…).  Anyhow, like I said, just an observation…

Barack Odrama Updates… biden, hillary, the press

Hope you had a great weekend.  I sure did.  Let’s get caught up in the continuing “Barack Odrama”.

1. The big news from the weekend:  ”Obama Picks Biden As Running Mate”.   This was a smart/prudent choice on the part of Brotha Obama.  Why?  I’ll tell you…

  • He’s experienced (sat on/chaired the Senate Judiciary Committe and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee)
  • He’s liberal
  • He oozes middle/working class values
  • He is one of a few non-millionaires in the Senate
  • He is an attack dog.  He can/will talk shit with the best of ‘em.  True, he can go overboard/off-message at times, but I believe Barack can manage him effectively.
  • He believes in and supports military service to the country (in the coming weeks his son, a National Guardsman and the Atty. General of Delaware, will be deployed for military duty in Iraq).
  • And most important:  to everyday, working-class, middle-America White folk, Biden has “whip-appeal”.  Along with his voting record, his working/middle class ideals, and his numerous off-color/racist gaffes (see here), what lunch-pal carrying White American wouldn’t love this guy?

2.  Hillary/Bill and their supporters are really getting on my damn nerves.  Hillary and her loyal Klan are still popin’ off at the mouf (mouth).  I mistakingly assumed that after Obama announced Biden as his running mate that Hillary’s folk would shut the fuck up.  Nope.  They where quiet for a minute and then they were right back at it with all the zeal and fervor of an old-school southern style jim-crow lynch mob.  The latest polls are saying that 30% of Hillary’s backers – life long Democrats - are not going to Vote Obama/Biden come November.  I’m not mad at ‘em though.  Given the state of race in this country – this behavior is expected.  The problem is Hillary and Bill.  If they really wanted to, they could, with one short highly publicized cleverly-worded speech, put an end to all of this.  They choose not to.  And now, both of them get to speak/have a huge presence at the convention… If I were Barack, I would police the hell outta those speeches.  After that vile back-stabbing concession speech that Hillary gave a few months back,  I wouldn’t trust them Clintons at all.  I can’t wait to see how this plays out.

3.  The media.   I keep hearing the media talking about how Barack has failed to connect with everyday White Folk, or how he hasn’t done a good job of making himself known to small town America.   They just don’t get it.  The headlines/sound-bites should read: “Small town (White) America adamantly refuses to embrace Democratic Presidential nominee because he is Black”.  Relatedly, where are the stories/features about the 18-34 yr old White Americans that are overwhelmingly and excitedly throwing their support behind Obama?

That’s all for now.

The Wiz…

Hey people.  Today I’m taking a break from Election 2008.   I’ll get back to it on Monday.  Moving right along.  I watched THE WIZ the other night with my shorties…  Man – it sure was different than how I remembered it.  I used to think it was a cold-ass flick.  Not any more.  That shit was racist (bad witch: short, fat, and dark-skinded; good witch: tall, thin light-skinded and pretty) and kinda scary considering its “G” rating.  And why the fuck was old-ass Diana Ross cast as Dorthy???  Yeah, about half way through I had to turn the flick off.  I spent the rest of the evening 1) talking to my kids about the light/dark skinded issue in the Black community; and 2) comforting my youngest child who was a little startled by the wicked-witch and her gang of flying apes on motorcycles.  I think Diana Ross scared his ass too.
